Last Saturday the Helsinki based Pussy Club celebrated it’s 10th anniversary. The club started originally as an afterhour party at Lepakko here in Helsinki taking place every Saturday and Sunday morning and serving dance hungry ravers until noon every weekend. Crazy days with banging trance in a smoke filled small Tallibaari room! Pussy promoter Taru also used to organize legendary DJ sauna sessions in Lepakko which were great scene uniting (and intoxicating) sessions. Since then Pussy has had events in Kerma, Rosegarden, Redrum, Nosturi, Fever and most notably the glamorous Hesperia around 2002 and 2003.
Last weekends party was one of the best Pussy events for a long time and not least because the venue Club Presidentti reminds so much Hesperia in many ways. Both are slightly “ruotsinlaiva” in feel but still very much enjoyable because of the size and a relatively stylish vibe. The Pussy team had worked to transform the venue into a traditional Pussy setting and with old school all stars crew of LJ Pinkki, VJ Juuso Syrjä, Nexus Xtreme Dancers and Precision Audio sound system they did a great job. It was so nice to see looooot of familiar faces after many years there and the night itself was practically sold out with well over 1000 people in. Milla Lehto warmed up the place perfectly before italian headliner Francesco Farfa who once again showed what DJing is all about…
Mr. Farfa treats records more like building blocks with most of the time two records playing simultanously with constant mixing’n’effecting going on. Also one of the rare DJs I’ve seen using Pioneer CDJ1000s multiple cue point function very well re-arranging tracks on the fly. His mixing style is definitely not the most elegant but there is strong sense of DJ handcraft there. Farfa had a hypnotic underground groove going on and it was fresh to hear something different with a mediterranian flavour on it. Still one of my fave top 5 DJs in the world. Between Milla and Francesco there was a drag show which received mixed reviews. I think clubbing can always be injected some tongue-in-cheek camp spirit in it. Life is not so serious buziness after all!
This was my first gig in Helsinki since February (except Unity in August) and it was sooo nice to be “back home” again. My set was mix of current big room house favorites (Morillo vs DLG: Where Are You Now?), more underground groovers (Timo Maas: Subtellite) and some prog house classics (Saints & Sinners: Pushing Too Hard (Futureshock remix) to pay homage to Pussy’s long history. Taru had requested to play also classics and to focus more on that Hesperia era. You can check the playlist on the Playlist section on my site. Only downside of the night was the encore track being stopped after one minute because of police presence. On the other hand it always gives a bit of underground feeling into a modern club nights when police stops the party! There are also couple great photo galleries from Jone at SESSIONS2 and Oka Morikawa. Lots of respect and a warm thank you to Taru and whole Pussy team for a great night and all these years!
My next gig in Helsinki is on Friday 12th of December at Kuudes Linja when we’re celebrating Jack’s Fifth Anniversary with Jody Wisternoff. That is going to be a P.A.R.T.Y!
PS. It was pretty hard to come up with a topic to this post which wouldn’t sound somewhat kinky… “How was pussy last weekend?”. “My Pussy review”. “I love Pussy”. Don’t sound that good..?
